U.S. EPA ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF HUNTERS POINT GRANTS

 (San Francisco)-- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(U.S. EPA) today announced the availability of environmental
justice grants totaling $50,000 to offer financial assistance to
community-based grassroots organizations in the Bayview Hunters
Point area. The grants would support community involvement in
environmental justice issues affecting this community.  

     The grant is being offered to the Hunters Point/Bayview
community as an additional means of supporting community
involvement in the cleanup of the Hunters Point shipyard and in
addressing other environmental issues in the community.  The
grant, offered through U.S. EPA's Federal Facilities Cleanup
Office, will last one year. In May, the U.S. EPA also announced
the availability of a $50,000 Technical Assistance Grant to help
the Bayview/Hunters Point community learn more about the cleanup
activities at the Hunters Point Shipyard site.        

     The U.S. EPA will hold workshops on Monday, June 26, and
Saturday, July 15, to explain the application process for each of
the grants, answer questions, and if needed, assist individuals
with applications.

     The June 26 workshop will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30
p.m. at the Earl P. Mills Community Center; 100 Whitney Young
Circle, San Francisco. The July 15 workshop will be held from 10
a.m. to noon at the Bayview Opera House; 4705 Third St., San
Francisco.    

     U.S. EPA's environmental justice small grants program is
designed to provide small grants to community-based grassroots
organizations with projects which broaden community understanding
of and participation in issues related to environmental justice.

     Environmental justice is the fair treatment of all people
regardless of race, culture or income with respect to
environmental issues. Fair treatment means that no racial, ethnic
or socioeconomic group should bear a disproportionate share of
the negative environmental consequences resulting from the
operation of industrial, municipal or commercial enterprises.

     Grant applications will be accepted until July 21, 1995. For
