La Jolla, Calif. company joins EPA's environmental "honors" program

37 companies nationwide join Performance Track program
(San Francisco, Calif.-- 04/27/2006) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today welcomed La Jolla Pfizer Laboratories as its newest member in a program that rewards facilities that voluntarily exceed environmental regulatory requirements.

Pfizer Laboratories, a pharmaceutical research and development facility, has pledged to reduce energy use by 21 percent or 62,000 MMBTUs, which will result in a 3,883.61 metric ton reduction of C02 emissions. They have also pledged to reduce hazardous waste generation by 1.5 percent, or 3.21 tons.

Pfizer was one of 37 facilities from 24 states that joined as the newest members in the National Environmental Performance Track program, which rewards facilities that work with their communities, set three-year goals for continuous improvements in environmental performance and have internal systems in place to manage their environmental impacts. Only facilities with a record of sustained compliance with environmental requirements are eligible to participate in this program.

“Performance Track members are demonstrating new ways of achieving tangible environmental results by working collaboratively with government and demonstrating the business value of their environmental leadership,” said Wayne Nastri, the EPA’s administrator for the Pacific Southwest Region. “This relationship leads to greater efficiency and reduced costs for both Performance Track facilities and environmental regulators.”

Since its inception in June 2000, the program has over 400 members in 46 states and Puerto Rico who have made more than 1,500 commitments to the environment. To date, Performance Track members have collectively reduced their water use by 1.9 billion gallons, conserved close to 9,000 acres of land, and increased their use of recycled materials by nearly 120,000 tons

Participating facilities receive a low priority status for routine inspections; reduced regulatory, administrative and reporting burdens; and public recognition. These benefits translate to greater efficiency and reduced costs for both Performance Track facilities and environmental regulators.
