EPA PROPOSES NEW STANDARDS TO PROTECT FAMILIES AND CHILDREN FROM LEAD PAINT HAZARDS

EPA has proposed new standards that will help families take steps to protect their children from exposure to lead paint hazards. The proposed standards identify levels of lead and certain conditions that can be used to determine whether the presence of lead in paint, dust or soil poses a hazard to young children. The proposed standards apply to most pre-1978 residential structures, such as single family homes and apartments, and facilities occupied by children under six years of age, such as daycare centers (built before 1978). It is estimated that 80 percent of all residential dwellings built before 1978 contain some lead-based paint. When lead-based paint deteriorates or is disturbed it can contaminate dust and soil and pose a significant hazard, especially to young children. Almost one million children under the age of six have elevated levels of lead in their bodies, making lead poisoning the number one environmental hazard for young children. EPA is accepting comment on its proposed standards for the next 90 days. The proposed rule is available on the Internet at: https://www.epa.gov/lead.
