CALIFORNIA EMPLOYEE ARRAIGNED FOR RELEASING WATER POLLUTANTS
On Oct. 28, a California Department of Corrections employee, Michael E. Valverde, supervisor of the sewer and water plant at the sewage treatment facility for the California Men's Colony in San Luis Obispo, Calif., was arraigned in federal court in Los Angeles for the alleged knowing discharge of partially treated sewage and chlorine wastes into Chorro Creek in violation of the plant's discharge permit, failing to report these discharge violations to the Central Coast Region of the California Regional Water Quality Control Board as required by law, and reporting false statements relating to the sampling and laboratory analysis of wastewater discharged into the Creek. This case was investigated by EPA's Criminal investigation Division, the FBI and the Central Coast Region of the California Regional Water Quality Control Board.
