Six New England Facilities Accepted Into EPA’s National Environmental Performance Track Program

(Boston, Mass. – May 9, 2006) – Six additional New England businesses are joining more than 400 facilities nationwide that have made voluntary commitments to exceptional environmental practices under EPA’s National Environmental Performance Track program. The new members join 33 other New England facilities which are already Performance Track partners.

As a mechanism to enable voluntary partnerships between EPA and individual facilities to attain environmental results by exceeding regulatory requirements, Performance Track has gained more than 400 members in 46 states and Puerto Rico since being started in June 2000. The program has achieved solid environmental results by recognizing and rewarding facilities that go beyond minimum regulatory requirements by voluntarily using formal environmental management systems, conducting outreach within their community and continuously improving their environmental performance.

“Performance Track is showing that many private sector New Englanders understand that doing what's good for the environment is also good for business,” said Robert W. Varney, regional administrator for EPA's New England Office. “I applaud the six new program members who are joining nearly three dozen other New England institutions by stepping up to the plate to help better protect our air, water and land.”

The new Performance Track member facilities are:

· Covanta Haverhill, Inc., of Haverhill, Mass., who operates an energy-generating municipal waste combustor facility, an on-site landfill, and a leachate treatment facility;
· Intel Massachusetts, Inc., of Hudson, Mass., a manufacturer of semiconductor products and research and design center;
· Pratt & Whitney–North Berwick Parts Center, of North Berwick, Maine, maker of jet engine components;
· Stanley Fastening Systems, of East Greenwich, R.I., which makes fastening tools and fasteners for various applications;
· Stanley Tools Pittsfield Plant, of Pittsfield, Vt., which produces wooden tool components, wooden levels, and various masonry tools; and
· Vectron International, of Hudson, N.H., a manufacturer of frequency control products and sensors.

Performance Track members make commitments to achieve environmental improvements over the course of the next three years. These commitments fall under a wide variety of categories, including energy use, water consumption, discharges to water, materials use, air emissions, waste generated, and land/habitat preservation.

EPA New England’s Performance Track members have achieved significant improvements in their environmental performance since 2001. Collectively, during their enrollment through 2004, facilities have:

- Decreased their use of energy by more than 92,000 million British thermal units (mmBtus);
- Decreased water consumption by 651 million gallons;
- Decreased the use of materials by almost 5,800 tons;
- Decreased solid (non-hazardous and hazardous) waste by almost 4,100 tons; and
- Decreased air emissions by more than 260,000 tons.

In addition, the 15 facilities participating in New England’s “Energy Challenge” decreased their greenhouse gas emissions by more than 9,400 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (MTCO2E) in 2004, the first year of the Challenge.
