UTAH COMPANY PLEADS GUILTY IN CLEAN WATER ACT CASE
Syro Inc., an Ohio Company with a steel manufacturing facility in Centerville, Utah, agreed on July 30, to pay a total of $750,000 in fines and penalties and further agreed to make $250,000 in voluntary contributions when it pleaded guilty to two counts of violating the Clean Water Act. In its plea, Syro admitted to discharging wastewater containing zinc into South Davis County’s sewer system. Zinc is harmful to aquatic life. In addition, effluent from the South Davis District sewer system entered the Farmington Bay Wetlands, which is the home of the Farmington Bird Refuge. The $250,000 will be divided as follows: $100,000 to the Utah Department of Environmental Quality’s Hazardous Substances Mitigation Fund, $100,000 to the South Davis County Sewer Improvement District and $50,000 to the Western States Project. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division and the Environmental Unit of the Office of the Utah Attorney General.
