GRANTS ANNOUNCED TO LOCAL COMMUNITIES TO
ACCESS ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION
ACCESS ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION
In 1996, President Clinton directed EPA to develop a program that allows communities across the country the opportunity to provide timely environmental information to local citizens. This program is known as Environmental Monitoring for Public Access and Community Tracking (EMPACT). EMPACT is designed to provide public access to clear, timely and accurate environmental monitoring data using the latest technology which will be established in 86 of the largest metropolitan areas. EPA is now announcing the award of approximately $3.4 million in grants to seven communities, which marks the second year of awards of grants to eight communities. This year’s projects will provide environmental information through advanced measurement, information management and communications technologies. These projects focus on innovative ways to track and deliver real-time environmental information on the status of the air, water and the ecosystems in local communities. This year’s winners are: City of Tulsa, Okla.; Washtenaw County, Mich.; City of El Paso, Texas; Narragansett Bay, R.I.; Syracuse City, N.Y.; South Florida Water Management District; and the City of Cheyenne, Wyo.
