(New York, NY) Ensuring that communities affected by Superfund sites are educated and kept informed about site activities and the Superfund process is a priority of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). On Wednesday, March 18, 2009, EPA will be holding two public information sessions from 3pm to 5pm and 7pm to 9pm to answer questions on proposed plans to investigate further the nature and extent of contamination at the Fair Lawn Well Field Superfund site in the Borough of Fair Lawn, Bergen County, New Jersey.

“We encourage residents of the Borough of Fair Lawn to come to our public information sessions to learn more about what we plan to do at this site,” said Acting Regional Administrator George Pavlou. “Keeping residents and the public informed on the Superfund process is essential to fulfilling our mission in protecting the health and safety of communities and the environment.”

The types of decisions that will be made regarding the future direction of cleanup work at the Fair Lawn site will be based on EPA’s evaluation of existing data that has already been collected, as well as obtaining and evaluating new data. Goals of the proposed investigation and study include fully characterizing the scope of contamination in ground water and surface water at the site by installing more monitoring wells, as well as defining the risk of vapors that may be emanating from surface soil at the site.

The public information sessions will be held at the Fair Lawn Municipal Building located at 8-01 Fair Lawn Avenue in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. EPA welcomes all residents and members of the community to attend the public information sessions to ask questions or raise any concerns they may have in relation to the Fair Lawn Well Field Superfund site.
