CHRYSLER AND MITSUBISHI VEHICLES RECALLED FOR EMISSION REPAIR
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today said Chrysler Motors and Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America Inc. will begin recalling about 50,000 passenger cars that may exceed the federal nitrogen oxides exhaust emission standard. The affected vehicles are 1995 model-year Eagle Talons, Mitsubishi Eclipses, Chrysler Sebrings, and Dodge Avengers equipped with 2-liter dual overhead cam non-turbo gasoline engines with manual transmissions. The automakers agreed to recall the vehicles after EPA discovered the emissions problem during routine testing. Nitrogen oxide is a major contributor to the formation of smog, which aggravates respiratory illnesses such as asthma, and acid rain, which can damage plant and animal life and stone buildings and statues. To remedy the emissions problem, the auto manufacturers will replace the fuel pressure regulator, remove the exhaust aspirator and either replace or re-program the powertrain computer. Vehicle owners will receive a written recall notice from the manufacturers. All of the repairs are performed free of charge. EPA advises owners to schedule an appointment with their respective dealerships after receiving the recall notice.
