EPA TO CLEAN SHIP GRAVEYARD AREA

Where: The New Bedford Harbor Superfund Site
Meet at the Former Herman Melville Shipyard
Herman Melville Avenue between Kilborn and Hervey Tichon Ave.

What: Demolition of Abandoned, Partially Sunken Maritime Vessels
Why: The vessels are being removed to allow for dredging of
PCB-contaminated harbor sediment
When: Wednesday, April 10 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Work crews hired by EPA will use an iron claw excavator from a barge in the harbor to demolish the vessels. There are numerous types of vessels including ten wooden boats, one steel tug, and several barges. This area of the harbor is known to local residents as New Bedford's Pearl Harbor.
