North Dakota company awarded $70,000 EPA innovation research contract

(Denver, Colo. - Feb. 28, 2007) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $70,000 Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract to Technology Applications Group, Inc., Grand Forks, N.D.

Technology Applications Group will research non-chromate conversion coatings for magnesium alloys used in the automotive industry. The contract was awarded in EPA’s SBIR focus area, “Innovation in Manufacturing for Environmental Protection.”

The researchers will evaluate the feasibility of using titanium or vanadium compounds in coating processes for magnesium alloys instead of using highly toxic chromium.

This is a Phase I or "proof of concept" award. There will be a total of 36 such contracts awarded by EPA nationwide.
