EPA TO HOLD A PUBLIC MEETING REGARDING THE PROPOSED PLAN FOR THE BARBER ORCHARD SUPERFUND SITE IN WAYNESVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public meeting on Thursday, August 7, 2003 regarding the proposed plan for the Barber Orchard Superfund site in Waynesville, North Carolina. The meeting will be held from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. in the Haywood County District Court Annex building (old Dayco Union Hall) on Hendrix Street in Waynesville. EPA representatives will discuss the results of the Remedial Investigation (RI) and Feasibility Study (FS). Also, all interested persons are urged to attend the public meeting to provide input to EPA.
A thirty (30) day public comment period began July 28, 2003 and will end midnight August 27, 2003. During the comment period, EPA will accept comments pertaining to the proposed plan. Comments should be postmarked no later than August 27, 2003 and mailed to the U.S. EPA, Region 4, Jon Bornholm, Remedial Project Manager, 4WD - NSMB, 61 Forsyth Street, Atlanta, Georgia 30303. The Barber Orchard site is located off of Highway 74/23, approximately 3 miles west of Waynesville and consists of approximately 438 acres. This property was used as an apple orchard from 1903 to the mid 1980's when the owners filed for bankruptcy. In the late 1980's the land was parceled off and sold for residential development. The site was placed on the National Priority List of hazardous waste sites in September 2001 |
