Tips for Accessing Toxic Release Inventory Information

      Each year since 1987 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a Toxic Release Inventory (TRI). EPA will release the 1998 TRI, containing data for1997, soon.

       Making information readily available and easily understood is a priority of EPA. Improvements in how TRI data is made available to the public are just one example of the Agency's commitment to citizens' right to know about the environment in their communities.

       EPA has created several Internet sites to increase public access to TRI information. TRI reports can be obtained in a variety of formats including by state, by industry classification, by specific facility name, by zip code and more. The sites also contain links to general and health-related information about each chemical reported.

       The latest information will be available at the web sites listed below immediately following distribution of the press release from EPA headquarters announcing the release of the 1998 TRI:

       TRI plays a vital role in informing citizens about activities in their neighborhoods involving toxic substances. It also serves as a report card documenting how the nation is progressing in decreasing industrial releases of toxic chemicals into the environment.

       This data package is compiled from reports submitted to EPA and state environmental agencies by individual manufacturing, processing and federal facilities throughout the country. These mandatory annual reports document the use and release of more than 660 specific chemicals and 28 chemical categories.
