EPA TO HOLD PUBLIC AVAILABILITY SESSION REGARDING THE NORTHEAST CHEMICAL SITE IN WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public availability session to discuss the start of a Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis at the Northeast Chemical site in Wilmington, North Carolina on Thursday, June 27, 2002. The availability session will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Magnolia Room at the Hilton Hotel, 301 North Water Street in Wilmington. EPA officials will be available to provide information, answer questions, and address concerns regarding the site. The site is composed of three parcels of land owned by: Norris Flowers - 12-acres; Southern States - 44.1-acres; and Louisiana Pacific Company - 14-acres. All three parcels border the west bank of the Northeast Cape Fear River and Highway 412-N. In the early 1900's, the site was used to manufacture phosphate fertilizer. Currently, the site only produces sulfuric acid. The major contaminants of concern are lead and arsenic.
