Louisiana Environmental Projects Receive EPA Grants

      Two projects in Louisiana received environmental education grants totaling $23,755 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The projects increase environmental awareness while encouraging students to pursue careers in environmental fields.

      "Our environment's future depends on our children's understanding of environmental issues and their ingenuity in creating solutions.  Environmental education projects that provide real world contexts and results are the best way to foster these abilities," EPA Regional Administrator Richard E. Greene said.

      Teaching Responsible Earth Education of New Orleans received $15,755 for its program, "Earthkeepers Project: Justice through Environmental Education." Two three-day outdoor environmental learning programs will be held at Jean Lafitte National Park and Preserve and Barataria Education Center for 120 students, teachers and volunteers from the New Orleans Public Schools. Interactive outdoor activities will teach students about their tasks as Earthkeepers, i.e., learning more about the earth, experiencing it in a new way, using knowledge to create good environmental habits and sharing information with others.

      Louisiana State University in Shreveport received $8,000 for its "High School Watershed Education Project." Workshops will be offered by the environmental faculty at the university to demonstrate and teach scientifically sound water quality monitoring and sampling techniques, field data compilation and basic laboratory analyses. Field work will be conducted in the Red River Education and Research Park, the home of cutting-edge environmental research led by Louisiana State University in Shreveport and other universities, business and industry, and city, state and federal agencies.

      This year, EPA's Region 6 office received 52 entries from Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. Fifteen groups were selected to receive about $160,000 in environmental education grants. Since 1992, EPA has received between $2 and $3 million in grant funding per year and has awarded about 1,800 grants nationwide.
