PROJECT XL TEAM CONTRIBUTION MERITS V.P. GORE AWARD
On May 23, EPA’s Project XL team received Vice President Gore’s Hammer Award which salutes federal employees and their partners for significant contributions in support of reinventing government. The Project XL team was heralded for using reinvention principles to create a government that works better, costs less and delivers benefits to the environment, businesses and communities. Under Project XL, the agency offers regulatory and other flexibility to businesses, communities, industry sectors and local government agencies to allow them to test new approaches that promise superior environmental results and are transferable to other situations. More than 50 XL projects are underway and successful results from several projects are leading to changes in the way EPA protects public health and the environment. Individual projects have helped companies reduce pollution and cut business costs. They have also provided stakeholders with meaningful opportunities to participate in environmental decisions. The testing of these innovative ideas is producing long range benefits as EPA applies these new approaches to core functions such as rulemaking, permit development and information management.
