EPA grant to improve East Waterford sewers

PHILADELPHIA - Funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will help the East Waterford Sewer Authority in Juniata County, Pa. pay for a new sewage collection system and wastewater treatment facility to serve 83 properties in East Waterford. EPA announced the $241,100 grant today.

“Old, inadequate sewer systems can be a major cause of water pollution in many communities. Our grant to the East Waterford Sewer Authority will support improvements to protect public health and help prevent pollution to Tuscarora Creek, ” said Donald S. Welsh, administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

East Waterford is a rural farming community adjacent to Tuscarora Creek. Most of the 83 residential properties are currently served by on-lot septic systems that have a history of failing because of small lot sizes, a high groundwater table and unsuitable soils. Malfunctioning septic systems can contaminate surface water and private drinking wells.

The East Waterford Sewer Authority plans to install about 9,500-feet of sewer lines and construct a treatment facility that would discharge into the Tuscarora Creek. Construction is expected to begin in March.
