(ATLANTA – October 3, 2014) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold a public meeting on Thursday, October 9, 2014 at 6:00 pm in the Trinity CME Church sanctuary on 3313 Shuttlesworth Dr., Birmingham, AL 35207 to inform community stakeholders about inclusion of the 35th Avenue Site on the National Priorities List (NPL).

Citizens are invited to attend the presentation by Agency officials to learn more about the NPL process and are encouraged to ask questions and provide feedback.

Through soil testing of approximately 1200 residential parcels within the Collegeville, Harriman Park and Fairmont communities, EPA has determined that contaminants exist at levels which require further action through the Superfund remedial program. The remedial program investigates and cleans up the most complex, uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste sites in the country by eliminating or reducing health risks and environmental contamination associated with hazardous waste sites. Currently, EPA’s Superfund Removal Program has a time-critical removal action underway that is addressing some of the most contaminated yards within the 35th Avenue Site.

On September 22, 2014, the EPA proposed to add the 35th Avenue Site to the NPL. The NPL is a list of national priorities among the known or threatened releases of hazardous substances throughout the United States. The NPL is intended primarily to guide EPA in determining which sites warrant further investigation to assess the nature and extent of public health and environmental risks associated with a site. Proposed NPL sites are subject to a 60-day public comment period. EPA will accept written comments on the NPL proposal from September 22, 2014 through November 21, 2014. The final listing of the site on the NPL will occur in 2015, and will include a response to any comments received.

The materials used to support the proposed listing are available for viewing online at www.regulations.gov. Written comments to the proposed listing may be submitted three different ways. Comments can be sent in the mail to Docket Coordinator, Headquarters, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, CERCLA Docket Office (mail code 5305T), 1200 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. Washington, DC 20460. They can also be submitted via email to [email protected] or online at www.regulations.gov.
