CHICAGO (Apr. 22, 2005) — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has issued an administrative consent order to Citation Corp. to melt only clean scrap at the company's aluminum recovery plant at 6378 U.S. Highway 6 W., Butler, Ind.
The EPA order also required Citation to certify that it would not operate a thermal chip dryer, scrap dryer, delacquering kiln, decoating kiln or sweat furnace at the plant.
The order does not limit EPA's authority to seek appropriate relief, including penalties, for Citation's alleged violation of federal regulations requiring planning, notification, testing and demonstration that its furnaces comply with emission limits for dioxins and furans.
There is evidence that dioxins may cause liver damage and probably cause cancer in humans, and furans may cause cancer in humans.
