HAZARDOUS WASTE
Insulation Foam and Roofing Inc., (IFR) of Jackson, Miss., was indicted on Sept. 23, in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi in Hattiesburg for illegally transporting and disposing of hazardous wastes in violation of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. It is alleged that IFR transported drums of hazardous waste without a permit and illegally dumped them on property in Jefferson Davis County between September 1994 and September 1995. A number of hazardous substances were allegedly contained in the drums, including lead and benzene. Exposure to lead has been linked to neurological disorders and exposure to benzene is known to cause cancer in people. If convicted, IFR faces a maximum of up to $500,000 in fines. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, the FBI, Department of Transportation Inspector General’s Office, the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality and the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.
