FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $50,000 Technical Assistance Grant (TAG) to the Peoples Action Coalition of Kellogg, Idaho, a local group that promotes community involvement in public health issues surrounding the cleanup of the Bunker Hill Superfund site.
Announcing today's grant in Seattle was Chuck Clarke, EPA's Northwest regional administrator.
"Local communities play a key role in the Superfund cleanup process," said Clarke. "Technical assistance grants help groups keep residents informed and involved as active partners in these cleanups."
The Peoples Action Coalition(PAC), along with other local community groups, has a long history of involvement at the Superfund site. Area residents have voiced concerns about the environmental impacts of past mining and smelting operations on local air, water and soils.
This reimbursable federal grant, along with $12,720 in required matching funds or in-kind contributions provided by PAC, will be used over the next three years to hire a technical advisor who will interpret complex scientific data, help the group evaluate and comment on proposed cleanup proposals, and inform the community through arranging meetings, public access TV coverage, and documenting site activities through newsletters.
