NEWS ADVISORY
An EPA administrative law judge has ordered that $3,780 in civil penalties be paid by a Washington State firm that invited beekeepers around the country to by a pesticide that had not been registered with EPA, as required by federal law.
The ruling came this fall to close out an EPA complaint against Tuttle Apiary Laboratories of Woodland, Washington, and the firm's owner, Steve Tuttle. The complaint was issued in March 1996, and alleged that Tuttle illegally advertised "Mite Solution," in a January 1996 edition of a national magazine for beekeepers. "Mite Solution" has never been registered as a pesticide with EPA.
The complaint also alleged that "Mite Solution" had been sold to a Michigan apiary supply dealer in December 1995, after Tuttle had been warned by EPA in May 1995 to stop selling the product and to submit it to EPA for registration.
