EPA TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING IN SIMPSONVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA TO DISCUSS AMENDMENTS TO THE RECORD OF DECISION FOR THE PARA-CHEM SOUTHERN INC. SUPERFUND SITE

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold a public meeting in Simpsonville, Greenville County, South Carolina to discuss amendments to the Record of Decision (ROD) for Para- Chem Southern, Inc. Superfund site. The public meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 26, 1999 at Bryson Middle School located at 703 Bryson School Drive in Fountain Inn, South Carolina. The purpose of the meeting will be to provide the public with information pertaining to the site and to solicit public comments.
The purpose of this proposed amendment seeks to modify the cleanup plan for one of the waste areas to a more cost effective approach while still maintaining the same level of protection for the public. This amendment proposes to treat the waste in place rather than moving the waste to a landfill as originally planned.
EPA is opening a thirty (30) day public comment period that commences Tuesday, August 26, 1999 and continues through Thursday, September 25, 1999. The purpose of this period is to accept all comments, questions and/or facts that pertain to the amendment. EPA will review all comments, questions and/or facts collected during the public comment period and the public meeting before reaching a final decision. Written comments should be mailed to:

The Para-Chem Southern, Inc. site produces acrylic polymers, thickeners, latex coatings, and adhesives. As a result of waste disposal activities, the groundwater at the site became contaminated with waste products.
