BOSTON -- The Environmental Protection Agency, along with 15 other federal agencies, is encouraging municipalities and other entities across New England interested in redeveloping abandoned, contaminated properties to apply for status as one of 10 national pilots being chosen as "brownfields showcase communities".
The selectees will receive technical, financial and other assistance from agencies ranging from the Small Business Administration to the Department of Commerce.
The brownfields program allows states, municipalities and other stakeholders in economic redevelopment to work together to assess, clean up and reuse sites that have been abandoned, idled or underused due to real or perceived contamination.
The deadline for applications is Sept. 19. For more information on how to apply for the program, contact Gayle Rice at (202)260-8431 or Sven-Erik Kaiser at (202)260-5138. Information can also be obtained on the internet at "https://www.epa.gov/brownfields".
