The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public meeting to provide residents with an opportunity to learn about and discuss up-coming activities at the Tennessee Products Superfund site in Chattanooga, Tennessee on Thursday, September 2, 2004.
The public meeting will begin at 7:00 P.M. at the South Chattanooga Complex, 1151 West 40th Street in Chattanooga. EPA will be available to provide information, answer questions, and address citizen concerns about the site. All interested persons are encouraged to attend the meeting. EPA has issued a Fact Sheet, entitled Explanation of Significant Differences (ESD), which explains a recent EPA decision to modify the cleanup plan. The modification involves sending wastes from the site to a solid waste landfill, instead of a waste-to-fuel facility. A fact sheet regarding the modification was mailed out to the community and placed in the site Information Repository, located at the Sallie Crenshaw Bethlehem Center, 200 W. 38th Street in Chattanooga. A thirty (30) day public comment period for the ESD began on August 16, 2004 and will end midnight September 14, 2004. Comments should be addressed to Nestor Young, Remedial Project Manager, U.S. EPA Region 4, Waste Management Division, 11th Floor, 61 Forsyth Street, S.W., Atlanta, Georgia 30303. The site is located in the Alton Park/Piney Woods neighborhood in South Chattanooga and consists of coal-tar contaminated sediments along 2.5 miles of Chattanooga Creek. The site was placed on the NPL using an Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) health advisory in 1995. The facility was in operation from approximately 1918 until 1987 and was operated by various companies. Contamination was caused in part, by the former coal carbonization facility (coke plant) located near the creek. The first phase of the cleanup of Chattanooga Creek was completed in November 1998. Persons interested in additional site information are encouraged to contact Nestor Young, Remedial Project Manager or Linda Starks, Community Relations Coordinator, at 1-800-435-9233. |
