CHICAGO (May 27, 2005) — The University of Toledo, in partnership with numerous national, state and private enterprises, has received a grant from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for a project that will evaluate and weigh the benefits of reusing industrial byproducts.
Partners include the American Coal Ash Association, Great Lakes Byproducts Management Association and Ohio EPA.
Huge volumes of industrial byproducts are produced every day by industrial facilities. This project will evaluate ways to properly manage industrial byproducts by diverting them from landfills, minimizing use of resources and decreasing costs and energy consumption.
According to Mary Setnicar, EPA Region 5 Pollution Prevention and Programs Initiatives chief, "this project will take what we know about measuring solid wastes, like cans and paper, and apply it to new waste streams like industrial byproducts."
