(ATLANTA – July 19, 2007) The EPA Superfund removal action at the Kentucky Wood Preserving Site in Winchester, Clark County, Ky. began this week. The removal action at the site is a short-term cleanup intended to stabilize the site and remove any hazards it may pose to human health and the environment.
The Kentucky Wood Preserving Site is located at 200 Magnolia Street in Winchester. The company used Copper Chromated Arsenate (CCA) wood preservatives in its operations, which reportedly ceased in October 2006. At the time the business ceased operation, the treatment system was full of CCA solution that needed removal. Based on this information, the EPA and the Kentucky Department of Environmental Protection conducted a site evaluation at the facility in April 2007. As a result of findings revealed during the evaluation, EPA determined that a time-critical removal action is necessary.
