PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded an $81,127 grant to the Borough of Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania to help pay for new storm sewers that will help alleviate the flow of raw sewage into Marsh Creek.
The existing sewer line on Cone Street is a combined sewer system carrying both sanitary sewage and storm water. During periods of heavy rain or snow melts, the sewer system cannot handle the heavy flow. This results in raw sewage being discharged into Marsh Creek, creating a public health hazard.
“Old, inadequate sewer systems are a major cause of water pollution in many municipalities nationwide, and this grant will help improve the water quality and protect public health in Wellsboro,” said Donald S. Welsh, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.
The grant will be used to help pay for a new a separate storm sewer system along Cone Street so that much of the storm water will no longer flow to the borough’s wastewater treatment plant, eliminating the overflow of raw sewage into Marsh Creek.
The grant will pay for 55 percent of the estimated $147,500 project cost. The borough will use local funds to pay the balance.
