National Student Competition for Sustainability Designs

(12/11/03) To encourage the development of sustainable solutions for the environment, Paul Gilman, EPA Assistant Administrator for Research and Development, and William Wulf, President of the National Academy of Engineering, launched the People, Prosperity and the Planet (P3) Award. This national student design competition will enable college students to design sustainable projects that benefit the environment and are not prohibitively expensive. Sustainable development allows communities to grow and develop economically without compromising the local environment and quality of life. While traditional growth can lead to congestion and increased pollution, sustainable development advances both environmental protection and economic development. EPA’s research campus in Research Triangle Park, N.C., incorporates many sustainable features, including a building structure that used 10,000 tons of recycled steel; and natural landscaping that eliminates the need to water, fertilize and mow grass. Support for the competition includes more than 30 partners in the federal government, industry, and scientific and professional societies. The P3 competition will begin in January and 50 awards will be made in Fall 2004. In Spring 2005, teams will show their designs in Washington, D.C., to an NAE panel to compete for the top P3 Award.
