EPA grant puts kids in the know about environmental health

SALISBURY, Md. - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today presented Salisbury University with a grant for $11,770 to minimize children’s exposure to environmental contaminants by training childcare providers to understand environmental contaminants.

The program will focus on the potential heath effects of contaminants such as lead and the best ways to minimize exposure to children. The program will also train childcare providers with the tools to teach children how to protect themselves.

“In proportion to their size, children breathe more air, drink more water and eat more foods than adults. This makes them especially vulnerable to the adverse health affects from exposure to environmental contaminants,” said Donald S. Welsh, U.S. EPA mid-Atlantic regional administrator.

Since 1992, EPA has provided almost $3 million annually in funding to local organizations and schools nationwide. These grants fund education programs in nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and governmental agencies supporting a wide range of environmental issues for citizens of all ages.
