EPA Announces Availability of Administrative Record for Thomaston Tire Fire Site in Upson, Ga.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency announced today that it has completed a Superfund hazardous substances removal at the Thomaston Tire Fire Site in Thomaston, Upson County, Georgia and the Administrative Record is available for public review.
The Administrative Record file includes documents that form the basis for selection of removal action. Documents in the record may include, but are not limited to, preliminary assessment and inspection reports, test results, and the Action Memorandum. All interested persons are encouraged to review the documents and provide comments. The documents will be available for public review during normal business hours at the following location: U.S. EPA Records Center - Region 4 Sam Nunn Atlanta Federal Center - 11th Floor 61 Forsyth Street, SW Atlanta, GA 30303-3104 Attn: Debbie Jourdan The Thomaston Tire fire occurred at approximately 4:45 p.m. on September 17, 2002. Based on information received, approximately 20,000 to 30,000 tires were buried on a 5 acre area. It is believed that the tires were ignited by a small brush fire which occurred two earlier. At the request of GA Environmental Protection Department, EPA, and EPA contractors, responded and performed the emergency response action. The site is not on the National Priorities List (NPL) of hazardous waste sites. The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA, also known as Superfund) and the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization (SARA) authorize EPA to respond to actual or threatened releases of hazardous substances that may endanger public health, welfare or the environment. |
