EPA, FEMA and City Extend Deadline to Register for Downtown Cleanup and Testing Program

(#02107) New York, N.Y. – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in conjunction with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the City of New York, today announced that it will extend the deadline for lower Manhattan residents to sign up for assistance until December 28, 2002 to give downtown residents more time. Under the EPA World Trade Center Residential Dust program, Manhattan residents living below Canal, Allen and Pike Streets may ask to have their homes cleaned and/or tested for airborne asbestos by certified asbestos contractors.

To date, 1100 people have requested testing and 4159 have asked for cleaning and testing.
