CINCINNATI STEEL COMPANY FINED AND ORDERED TO IMPROVE POLLUTION CONTROL
On Jan. 30, the Cincinnati Steel Treating Co., (CST) was ordered to spend $350,000 to improve its oil-water separation pollution control system and pay $25,000 in criminal fines and $25,000 in restitution by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio in Cincinnati. CST pleaded guilty on Nov. 7, 1997, to illegally discharging oil into Whiskey Creek and the Little Miami River. The restitution monies will be paid to Little Miami Incorp., and Thomas Moore College, both of which will use the funds to help children in elementary and high school study how to improve river quality. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, the Defense Criminal Investigative Service, the Ohio EPA Special Investigations Section, and the fire departments of Cincinnati, Fairfax, Anderson Township and Mariemont, Ohio.
