(Dallas, Texas – September 17, 2010) The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded $200,000 to the West Central Texas Council of Governments (WCTCOG) in Abilene, Texas. The funds will be used by the WCTCOG in developing and establishing a local Brownfields program in accordance with the Brownfields Revitalization Act of 2002 and EPA Brownfields Program National Guidance. The funds will also be used by the WCTCOG in obtaining information and tools needed in order to conduct assessments and cleanup of Brownfields properties and return them to reuse.

Brownfields are abandoned or underutilized properties stigmatized by past commercial or industrial uses and are an ongoing challenge for communities of every size. By focusing on redevelopment or reuse, properties are put back into productive use while helping to keep undeveloped lands in a natural state.
