BOSTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is hosting a public information meeting on Monday, May 12th at 7 p.m. at the City Council Chambers, 111 North Main Street, Bristol, Connecticut to discuss upcoming cleanup activities at the Bristol Franklin Street Site located at 51-100 Franklin Street in Bristol, Connecticut.
EPA reached an agreement last month with General Motors Corporation to cleanup contamination at the site that the company once owned. EPA and representatives from General Motors Corporation will be on hand to discuss the upcoming field work scheduled to take place at the site this spring and summer. GM will conduct a study of the property to delineate the extent of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contamination at the site. The cleanup will include elimination of the discharge of PCB-contaminated waste oil to North Creek, excavation and proper disposal of PCB-saturated soils, and removal and disposal of friable asbestos-containing material found in a tank farm and tunnel.
GM is currently maintaining a concrete oil containment area in North Creek that the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (CT DEP) had been operating. Warning signs have been posted at the site and necessary precautions are being taken to prevent unauthorized access.
The cleanup project is expected to take four to eight months to complete.
The Bristol Franklin Street Site has been used for manufacturing and equipment storage since the early 1900s. GM is believed to have used the building and the surrounding property to manufacture ball bearings from the early 1900s to the mid-1960s. EPA first became involved at the site in March, 2002 when the CT DEP notified EPA that PCB-oil was breaking out of an embankment of the North Creek that borders the site.
