NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $950,200 grant to the Municipal Sanitary Authority of the City of New Kensington to help pay for improvements to its wastewater treatment plant that serves about 35,000 residents in the city and the surrounding areas.
The authority is required, under a March 1992 consent order issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, to upgrade the treatment of sludge so that it is suitable for landfill disposal.
The funding will be used to rehabilitate the existing sludge digesters at the treatment plant and to install an additional belt filter press for sludge dewatering.
“These improvements to the New Kensington Wastewater Treatment Plant will provide for a sludge suitable for landfilling, make the plant more efficient to operate, and reduce the disposal costs for the communities utilizing the plant,” said Bradley M. Campbell, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.
The Federal grant will pay for 55 percent of the estimated $1.7 million project, and the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority will provide a loan for the balance.
