BMW RECALLS CARS TO REPLACE
CHIP IN ENGINE COMPUTER
EPA announced today that Friday, Aug. 27, BMW will begin recalling about 30,000 cars to replace a programming chip in the engine control computer that may cause the vehicles to exceed the federal nitrogen oxide exhaust emission standard. The new chip, with improved programming, will correct the reduced performance of the oxygen sensor. The vehicles involved in the recall are 1995, 3.0 and 4.0 liter BMW 530i, 530iT, 540i, 740i, 740iL, and 840Ci models and includes both California and 49-state cars. The automaker agreed to the recall after testing in-use cars under the Agency’s durability program which requires manufacturers to determine if vehicles continue to comply with the federal emission standards after they are sold. Owners will be notified by the manufacturer. The repair work will take about two hours and will be performed free of charge.
