EPA honors leadership in emergency prevention and preparedness

SAN FRANCISCO The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced the recipients of its new regional Emergency Prevention and Preparedness Leadership Awards during the HazMat Explo conference at the Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas.
Honoring leadership over the last five years, Kathryn Lawrence, the EPA's Pacific Southwest regional chief for emergency prevention and preparedness, presented a awards to Clark County, Nev., Arizona State Emergency Response Commission, Honolulu Local Emergency Planning Committee, Gila River Chemical Tribal Emergency Response Commission, and the California Specialized Training Institute from San Luis Obispo, Calif.
"The EPA is pleased to honor regional leaders who have taken the initiative to develop strong prevention and preparedness programs. We live in an era of shrinking budgets and the leaders we are recognizing today have shown a steadfast commitment to protect human health and the environment," said Kathryn Lawrence. "Particularly in the post-9/11 era, we recognize and appreciate the enormous efforts and creativity of our partners to overcome many obstacles in order to fulfill their duties."
HazMat Explo is an annual training conference for hazardous materials responders and planners in its seventh year. During the last six years, over 2,000 people have attended HazMat Explo drawing people from throughout Nevada and many from other states.
