(Dallas, Texas – October 17, 2006) As part of an on-going effort to get more youth and minorities involved in community environmental issues, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a new Spanish-language DVD and educational program today.

“Chucho Salva el Dia” (Chucho Saves the Day) is the humorous story of an environmentally aware artist and his dog Chucho. The DVD follows Chucho and the artist on a visit to a lake as they encounter storm water pollution and deal with public attitudes that affect the environment. The new Spanish-language DVD is aimed at school-age audiences within the Spanish-speaking community.

In addition to the DVD, EPA partnered with Texas Watch and students from Brentwood Middle School in San Antonio, Texas, to conduct water monitoring at Woodland Lake Park in celebration of World Water Monitoring Day.

The annual water monitoring campaign offers communities a chance to positively impact the health of rivers, lakes, estuaries and other waterbodies. Students from Brentwood Middle School tested for pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity and temperature with the help of Texas Watch program staff from Texas State University in San Marcos. This unique experience made students aware of their ability to take an active role in the protection of their water, air and soil.
