Boston - EPA New England today announced that French Bay Conservancy in Ellsworth, Maine, will receive a $12,000 environmental education grant from the agency. Working closely with their teachers, students from Mount Desert Island High School will take water quality samples from local swimming areas, and talk with area residents about what causes water pollution. The students will then take what they've learned and develop an educational outreach program to local officials, residents and other students to promote water quality awareness and environmental education.. The French Bay Conservancy and the Mount Desert Island Water Quality Coalition are developing a web page on these issues. The project will involve 200 sophomore students and three teachers at Mt. Desert Island High School and 75 students and 6 teachers from Mt. Island Elementary Schools.
"EPA is helping teachers across New England who want to bring environmental education into their classrooms," said Mindy Lubber, regional administrator for EPA New England. "These grants challenge educators to find new and creative ways to teach students about the environment."
EPA New England received more than 100 applications requesting a total of $1.4 million. The agency awarded $100,000 in grants for 13 projects. The EPA funds environmental education projects that focus on improving teaching skills for educators, typically through workshops; educating teachers, students, or the public about the environment and potential health problems stemming from environmental pollution; helping states or communities to develop and deliver environmental education programs; or promoting environmental careers among students
