HAZLETON, Pa.- On Tuesday, March 4th, the contractors working for the United States Environmental Protection Agency will remove water from sumps on 22nd Street and Laurel Street. The sumps are part of the groundwater collection system being used to resolve gasoline contamination in the Laurel Gardens area of Hazleton.
The work is being conducted to allow access to pumping equipment at the bottom of the sumps. New sump pumps will be installed as part of the overall installation of the permanent groundwater extraction system.
This work will begin with a diver entering the sumps to cap off pipes. Once the capping is completed, the water in the sumps will be pumped into a tanker truck for removal to a treatment facility. Traffic may be directed around the area for a short time.
Last week several pieces of water treatment equipment were moved into a building on the Tranguch property. Plans call for construction of the treatment system to run through March.
