EPA Administrator Joins Representatives from 13 Countries in Methane to Markets Partnership

(Washington, D.C. – November 15, 2004) On Tuesday, Nov. 16, EPA Administrator Mike Leavitt will join representatives from 13 other countries in signing an agreement creating the Methane to Markets Partnership. This initiative will advance international cooperation in the recovery and use of methane as a valuable clean energy source while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The administrator announced in July the formation of the partnership with six countries. Since then, six additional countries – including Russia and China – have agreed to join the pact. Countries participating in the partnership are expected to undertake activities designed to capture and use methane from landfills, coal mines and oil and gas systems.

WHO: EPA Administrator Leavitt, James Connaughton, chairman of the Council on Environmental Quality, representatives from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, Columbia, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, Ukraine and United Kingdom.
