EPA donates 20 computers to Buchanan County Schools

GRUNDY, Va. - The Environmental Protection Agency has donated 20 computers to the Buchanan County Public School System to be used for science classrooms for grades 7-12.

The computers, formerly used by EPA employees, are the latest of more than 900 computers that EPA’s mid-Atlantic region has donated to worthy organizations since 1996. They will be used for the science workshop to help the students conduct experiments that measure pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, turbidity etc.

"We are very proud that we can provide computers for such a worthwhile project whose goal is to raise the level of scientific literacy among students. It is inspiring that EPA computers are being used to enhance environmental education and environmental decision making in the 21st century," said Bradley Campbell, EPA’s regional administrator.

"I am extremely pleased that the EPA has agreed to provide computers to the Buchanan County School System for use in the county’s science classrooms," said Congressman Rick Boucher. "The ability to conduct science experiments through the use of computer technology will be of great benefit to students and teachers."

EPA has donated used computers directly to municipalities, schools and non-profit organizations in accordance with President Clinton’s Executive Order 12999, “Educational Technology: Ensuring Opportunity for All Children in the Next Century.” This executive order, signed by the president on April 17, 1996, helps to fulfill the federal government’s commitment to promote educational technology.

"These computers provide us with a great learning tool that our students can use to better understand scientific theories and help them learn more about our environment," said Frank Stiltner, the school district’ technology coordinator.
