RADFORD, Va. -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $4,999 grant to Radford University for a project that gets high school and college students involved in collecting environmental data at Wildwood Park.

Wildwood Park is a 50-acre forested valley in the heart of Radford. Students will collect data on species richness, abundance and diversity during outdoor laboratory classes at the park. Data results will be updated regularly and posted at the park.

“Participating students will benefit by becoming directly involved in an actual scientific investigation. It will give them an understanding of the changes taking place in the environment,” said Bradley Campbell, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

EPA’s education grant program is designed to stimulate grass-roots environmental education. Nationally, EPA awarded more than $2.3 million in environmental education grants in 2000 to schools, civic groups and non-profit organizations.
