EPA Awards $5,000 Environmental Education Grant to support conference on outdoor classrooms

PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $5,000 environmental education grant to the Coalition for Jobs & Environment, of Abingdon, Washington County, Va. to support a workshops for students, teachers and parents on how to develop outdoor classrooms.

“By embracing the concept of using the outdoors as a classroom, we can help our youth to learn the importance of respecting and protecting our natural resources,” said Donald S. Welsh, EPA’s mid-Atlantic regional administrator.

The one-day conference, entitled “Greening the Classroom” will be held March 20 at the Southwest Higher Education Center in Abingdon, Va. It will be open statewide to kindergarten through 12th grade teachers, home school teachers, and parents. The training will focus on creating and using wildlife habitats and ecosystem study areas as outdoor classroom.

Since 1992, EPA has provided almost $3 million annually in funding to local organizations and schools nationwide. These grants fund education programs in nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and governmental agencies supporting a wide range of environmental issues for citizens of all ages.
