FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
United Paint & Coatings, of Spokane, Washington, has become the third Northwest company to earn the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's "Evergreen Award" for corporate environmental excellence. The award will be officially presented on Wednesday, April 30, at the annual Environmental Forum for Business -- Expo ‘97 at the Spokane Conference center.
The Evergreen Award shines the spotlight on companies that are demonstrating how to build an environmentally sustainable economy in the Northwest, said Chuck Clarke, EPA regional administrator in Seattle.
United Paint & Coatings has shown how environmental protection and a thriving business can go hand-in-hand, Clarke said. We are continuing to look for more companies to recognize and showcase as environmental leaders.
United Paint & Coatings Success
United Paint and Coatings are manufacturers and suppliers of paints and coatings for roofing, industrial and architectural uses. Since 1993, the Company’s efforts to reduce solid and hazardous wastes, air emissions, and water discharges have resulted in significant pollution reductions, including reducing or eliminating certain hazardous waste streams, reducing or
eliminating use of several hazardous chemicals in their production process, and working with both suppliers and customers to purchase and sell less toxic products wherever practical. (*For more detailed information, see the accompanying fact sheet on United Paint and Coatings).
The Evergreen Award
EPA’s Evergreen Award is designed to showcase small, medium and large companies in the Pacific Northwest that have gone the extra mile to incorporate a waste-reducing ethic in their business planning.
While its roots are in regulation, pollution prevention is largely voluntary, Clarke continued. We’re looking for companies that deserve credit for going beyond simply complying with the law. And we know they’re out there.
Companies in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington will be considered for nomination if they are in full compliance with environmental laws, and meet the criteria of 1) having documented achievement in pollution prevention, 2) a commitment to the environment, and 3) a history of environmental leadership.
Nominations for the EPA Region 10 Evergreen Award will be accepted from employees of environmental regulatory agencies as well as companies themselves. The nomination deadline for the next round of awards is October 31, 1997 Nominations received after that date will be considered for subsequent rounds.
Complete nomination information and official forms may be obtained by contacting Carolyn Gangmark, at EPA Regional Headquarters in Seattle at (206)553-4072. Carolyn may also be reached by e-mail at: [email protected].
