University of Florida at Gainesville to Receive Grant

(Atlanta, July 29, 2005) The University of Florida at Gainesville has been awarded a $91, 959 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant to study the Economic Effects of harmful algal bloom (HABs) on Coastal Communities and Shellfish Culture in Florida.

This study will estimate the change in gross revenues to various business sectors of coastal communities affected by HAB events; calculate costs incurred by coastal communities to address the effects of HAB events; and quantify the effects of HABs and HAB-related harvest regulations on commercial molluscan shellfish operations.

The expected results of this study include: the methodologies developed will have broad applicability for investigating the economic effects of HABs; the findings will allow costal resource managers, local businesses and HAB researchers to better assess the community and business costs resulting from HAB events; and will provide for a more accurate evaluation of the costs and benefits associated with HAB mitigation, monitoring, regulation, and clean-up efforts. Also, the study will provide data for subsequent analysis of economic impacts.
