Excavation of Contaminated Soil Begins at the St. Catherine Street Site in Concord N.H.

(Boston, Mass. – June 22, 2006) - EPA began work this week to remove chromium contaminated soil from an approximate one-third acre residential property on St. Catherine Street in Concord, N.H.

An EPA Investigation of the site last fall revealed that chromium contamination is present in tannery waste buried on the property. The contamination is shallow, and extends for a few feet onto St. Catherine Street as well as onto an undeveloped, wooded property to the west.

EPA contractors will install a temporary fence and post warning signs around the perimeter of the work area before excavating the contaminated waste from the property. The contaminated soil will be transported off site for disposal at a permitted facility.

After the contamination is excavated, the area will be backfilled with clean soil, graded and revegetated. The project is expected to be completed within eight weeks.
