U.S. EPA ANNOUNCES $50,000 IN GRANTS FOR HUNTERS POINT

(San Francisco)-- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) has awarded environmental justice grants to two community-based organizations in the Bayview/Hunters Point neighborhood.

     A $28,000 grant was awarded to the Southeast Alliance for Environmental Justice and a $22,000 grant was awarded to the  Shoreview Tenants Association Inc. The groups will use the monies to support community activities addressing environmental justice issues in the Bayview/Hunters Point community, including issues that that may arise from the cleanup of the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard.  

     U.S. EPA's environmental justice grants program is designed to provide grants to community-based grassroots organizations with projects which broaden community understanding of and participation in issues related to environmental justice.

     Environmental justice is the fair treatment of all people regardless of race, culture or income with respect to environmental issues. Fair treatment means that no racial, ethnic or socioeconomic group should bear a disproportionate share of the negative environmental consequences resulting from the operation of industrial, municipal or commercial enterprises.
