CHICAGO (Nov. 9, 2007) - Students from Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, are exploring ways to improve the environment while beautifying their campus thanks to a recent $10,000 grant from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The grant is part of EPA's "People, Prosperity and the Planet,' or P3, competition that supports teams of college and university students who vie for design and sustainable environmental technologies awards.
The Heidelberg College entry, "Paving the Way to a Greener Campus: Alternative Paving Materials for Pollution Control and Aesthetic Appeal" features student-designed campus parking areas along Rock Creek. They will use recycled materials to capture polluted runoff water and divert it to low-cost treatment beds made up of native plants. The goal of the project is to make the most environmentally sustainable and cost-effective choices while at the same time creating parking areas that are functional and good-looking.

A team of students from Heidelberg's water resources, biology, chemistry and psychology departments will research and design the project. Faculty mentors and staff from the National Center for Water Quality Research will guide the process. In addition, three area businesses will provide technical advice. They include M and B Asphalt, Maple Quarry and WSOS Quilter Sign Shop.
Students from Heidelberg College and 57 other universities around the country will present their designs at the National Sustainable Design Expo April 22, 2008, in Washington D.C. Six P3 Award winners will be eligible for $75,000 to help implement and market their designs. For more information on P3 go to http://es.epa.gov/ncer/p3/index.html.
